Tudor Gown

The Tudor period under Henry VIII featured low-cut, square necked gowns, elaborate blackwork embroidery and intricate beadwork, and a variety of sleeve styles. Philippa - The gown at left is green cut-velvet with intricate beadwork and couched metal thread. The detachable oversleeves are completely beaded and couched, and the undersleeves are patterned velvet. The underskirt is the same patterned velvet, and the entire front is beaded. The french hood is black velvet and edged with beadwork. The blackwork partlet is embroidered front and back.

Amy - The gown at left is black velveteen with a silver metal thread brocade bodice, brocade undersleeves and black velveteen hanging oversleeves, lined with silver tissue. The bodice has picadils at the shoulders and waist, also lined with silver tissue. The underskirt is the same brocade, backed and fully lined with black linen. The cartridge-pleated velveteen overskirt is also lined with linen. The entire ensemble is trimmed in silver metallic and edged in black and silver braid. Click on each picture for a larger image.

Elizabeth - The dress is red silk over an ivory brocade underskirt and sleeves. The fabric of the underskirt and sleeves has been pearled, and the sleeves have been trimmed with black ribbon and yet more beading. The neckline and waist have been beaded as well, and the french hood is beaded to match. The chemise features reversible blackwork cuffs.

Miranda - This ensemble is made of silk dupioni. The bodice, skirt and sleeve lining are ivory while the sleeves and the stomacher are mauve. The stomacher is embroidered with metallic iridescent thread. The bodice laces at the back and both sides of the stomacher. The skirt is gathered into a waistband and closes with a hook and eye.
